Mountain Warfare Training Center (MWTC)

Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center (MCMWTC) is one of the Corps' most remote and isolated posts. MCMWTC conducts formal schools for individuals and battalion training in both summer and winter mountain operations. view The training emphasizes development of both individual and unit mountain skills with primary emphasis on enhancing overall combat capability. Marines at the Center are also involved in; testing cold weather clothing, equipment, human performance, rough terrain vehicles, developing doctrine, concepts to enhance the Corps' ability to fight and win in mountain and cold weather environments.

MCMWTC is located on California Highway 108 at Pickel Meadow. The center is 21 miles northwest of Bridgeport, California and 100 miles south of Reno, Nevada. The center occupies 46,000 acres of Toiyabe National Forest.

MCMWTC is located in the heart of a National Forest which affords a great opportunity to enjoy many outdoor recreational activities; including fishing, hiking, camping, etc. Nearby is beautiful Lake Tahoe, which also is excellent for outdoor recreation. Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) offer a number of items for recreational check out.

MCMWTC enjoys a modern fitness facility that includes a large weight and cardiovascular room, two racquetball courts a basketball court, a state-of-the-art indoor climbing wall, and a male and female locker room with dry sauna.

Located at Base Housing is a Community Center that offers various youth activities, a small but active youth sports program, and a Staff that also coordinates day camps. There is a small weight room, basketball/volleyball court, and on Wednesday and Friday evenings movies are shown at no cost on a big screen TV with surround sound. In addition to these activities, classes and workshops from CPR to college art are offered. On Sundays the Community Center becomes the Chapel with both Catholic and Protestant Services.

College classes by Barstow and Central Texas Colleges are also offered. These classes are held on Base and Coleville High School, located approximately 2 miles from Base Housing. CLEP, DSST exams, DANTES External Degrees and Independent Studies are also available. Internet classes are offered through a number of colleges and universities. An Apprenticeship Program is available for certain technical MOSs.

The Training Center is equipped with a small Marine Corps Convenience Exchange offering limited personal items (i.e. camera equipment, some civilian clothing, watches, miscellaneous snack items, bread/milk, etc.). Special ordering of items are available through the Bridgeport Main Exchange. A small Marine Corps Exchange is also located in the Coleville Housing complex. It carries a variety of household items and limited groceries. Small general stores are located in both Bridgeport, CA and Walker, CA. The nearest supermarket is located in Gardnerville, NV. The nearest major shopping center is in Reno, NV, approximately 100 miles from the Base and 75 miles from Base Housing.
